Australian Teens Top Internet Usage

Australian teenagers are spending up to 18 hours a week online, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. This was well above the nation’s average of 10 hours per week over the 2014-15 period. The most popular online activity for the demographic was social networking, used by 91% of those aged 15-19 years old.

The data also revealed the amount of Australian households with internet access had jumped from 83% in 2012-13 to 86% or 7.7 million homes in 2014-15. The figures are slightly lower for regional Australians compared to those in major cities, though you can expect to see the number climb with the launch of NBN’s Sky Muster satellite.

The most common reasons for using the internet were social media and banking, with 72% of Australians using those services respectively. 61% of users said they used the internet for purchasing goods and services and 60% went online for entertainment.
